When do patients need root canals?

Root canals are generally prescribed when the pulp inside of a tooth becomes infected. Infections can occur when bacteria make their way inside of a tooth through a chip or crack, or through an un-filled cavity. If an infection is left unchecked, the tooth will need to be removed, Root canals are a good way to get rid of infected tissue and retain the natural tooth.

What happens during a root canal?

During the root canal procedure, the dentist will first numb the tooth with local anesthesia. The dentist will then create an opening in the tooth, through which the infected tissue can be removed. The tooth will be filed down and shaped, and the inside of the tooth will be cleaned out to remove any lingering bacteria. After the tooth chamber is cleaned and dried, the dentist will use a sealer paste and rubber compound to fill the root canal of the tooth. At a subsequent appointment, the tooth will receive a filling over the hole created by the dentist. In some cases, the dentist may need to place a crown over the tooth, as well.

After a root canal, most patients are able to return to life as normal. Patients may experience some swelling or sensitivity, which can often be treated with ibuprofen or other over-the-counter medications. Patients should continue to follow good oral care habits and make regular visits to the dentist to ensure that the treated tooth remains in good condition. Our San Fernando Valley dentists at Sterling Smile Dental will make the procedure and follow-up dental care easy and pleasant.
